Each section offers fascinating glimpses into the past. View exquisite jewels, golden thrones imbedded with precious stones and the Spoonmaker’s Diamond, the 5th largest in the world in the Treasury. The Pavilion of the Holy Mantle holds the mantle once worn by the Prophet Mohammed. A holy man chants from the Koran over the sacred mantle day and night. Over 1,000 wives and concubines lived together in the Sultan’s Harem. Visits to The Harem are only by guided tour. Sign up early; tours fill fast.
No trip to Istanbul is complete without experiencing the Grand Bazaar. A shopper’s paradise of over 4,000 tiny shops spread over sixty-five indoor streets, the Grand Bazaar is an intoxicating blend of colorful sights, smells and sounds. There are priceless treasures and cheap trinkets. Bargaining is expected. Turkish merchants bargain with a smile and offer herbal tea to their shopping guests. The merchant states his price. Offer 50% of the asking price and settle for about 60% of the original price. There are many more majestic palaces, mansions, intriguing markets and exciting experiences in Istanbul. It cannot be seen in a single short visit. Like the song of a siren, it will live in your heart and call you to return again.
